Madison Poetry Writing Contest

Most poetry students have seen or heard of the movie Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams), and remember the now famous words "... Poetry. Beauty. Romance. Love. These are what we stay alive for". There is also the piece that most seasoned writers today, often refer to when talking about love and poetry. A piece by Napoleon Bonaparte to Joséphine "... I am going to bed with my heart full of your adorable image… I cannot wait to give you proofs of my ardent love… How happy I would be if I could assist you at your undressing, the little firm white breast, the adorable face, the hair tied up in a scarf a la creole. You know that I will never forget the little visits, you know, the little black forest… I kiss it a thousand times and wait impatiently for the moment I will be in it. To live within Josephine is to live in the Elysian fields. Kisses on your mouth, your eyes, your breast, everywhere, everywhere."

Poetry needs to be kept alive. Madison Poetry Writing Contest is open to all, U.S. and international poets who may consider themselves hopeless romantics, dreamers, visionaries, idealists, or just normal people gazing into art of expression, poetically. The winner will receive $1,000.00 (USD) and his/her book of poetry will be published by Madison Poetry Publishing House. This is a NO ENTRY FEE ($0 contest entry fee) contest, and all submissions must be made within the deadline. See additional description below.

Writing Contest Description: The winner will be offered a standard publication contract and will receive 100 copies to distribute to friends and family or keep a few as souvenirs. The contest will be judged by previous years' winners and a few well recognized and well respected national and international authors. The winner will be invited (all expenses paid) to be the judge for the following year. The decision of the judges and panelists will be final.

Prize: $1,000 to winner.

Entry Fees: $0 (no entry/submission fee)

Start Submission Date: September 1st, 2024

Closing Submission Date: February 1st, 2025

Special Requirements: All poems must be 50 lines or less and must be typed, font size of 10 or 12, with single or double line spacing. All entries must be original work produced by the contestant on any subject or theme. Contestants will enter their poem typed, single or double line spacing, within a maximum of 3 pages total. All entries must be original works or poetry. Madison Poetry Writing Contest is open everyone who is interested to present their own original poetry for competition and for recognition.
